Permanent Residence

Permanent Residence (PR) refers to your status in Canada.  As a PR of Canada, you still hold your citizenship with your home country.  As a PR, you are now allowed to do the following in Canada:

  • apply for most social benefits Canadian citizens would receive, including health care coverage,
  • live, work or study anywhere in Canada,
  • apply for Canadian citizenship,
  • protection under Canadian law and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms,
  • pay taxes and adhere to all Canadian laws at the federal, provincial and municipal levels.

To apply for a PR card, you must have been physically in Canada for minimum of 730 days in the last 5 years.

Note: special circumstances exist for times outside of Canada, that would still count:

  1. Accompanying a Canadian Citizen outside Canada
  2. Employment outside Canada
  3. Accompanying a PR outside of Canada
  4. Humanitarian and Compassionate grounds

Please contact us for information on "special circumstances" and to see if you are eligible to apply for PR.
