Before you apply...

Eligibility Requirements


  • be a permanent resident
  • have lived in Canada for 3 out of the last 5 years
  • have filed your taxes, if you need to
  • show how well you know Canada
  • prove your language skills


Here it is in more detail...


1) Permanent Resident Status

You must have permanent resident status in Canada if you wish to apply. You must not be under immigration review or fraud, you must not be under a removal order, have fulfilled all the requirements for your PR status. You must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1095 days within the 5 years prior to signing the application. Some exceptions apply. 


2)  Income Tax

You must have filed your tax obligations for at least 3 years during the 5 years prior to your application for citizenship.


3)  Language Skills

Must meet the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) level 4 or higher.  Proof is required.


4)  Citizenship Test

How well do you know Canada?  You will need to know it quite well if you intend on becoming a Citizen.  Areas to become familiar with:


  • history
  • geography
  • economy
  • government
  • laws
  • symbols


Test details: 

  • in English or French
  • 30 minutes long
  • 20 questions (pass mark: 15 correct answers)
  • multiple-choice and true or false questions
  • based on the official citizenship study guide: Discover Canada
  • usually written, but may be oral


Processing time: approx 12 months
